Leadership Peaks

Have you peaked? Hopefully your peak wasn’t winning the spelling bee in 3rd grade or throwing the touchdown pass in the big high school game 20 years ago. If your goal is to get a little better each day then your peak is yet to come. Unfortunately, for many leaders, they’ve reached their peak. Some peaked the day they got their title. That would be John Maxwell’s level 1 leader, a leader in name only. Some peaked the day before they lost their vision. Some peaked when they found themselves out of touch with their people. Others peaked when they lost their optimism. Great leaders have an optimistic vision of the future.

As I watch the olympics, it’s amazing to realize that the athlete has to peak during a 2-week window from a lifetime of training and preparation. If they miss the mark to any degree, they miss the gold. When it comes to leadership, the best of the best peak every day, meaning they get better and better every single day. To get better everyday the leader must be optimistic, have vision and love his people and organization.

Think about this… Do you find it difficult to cast the vision of the organization to your team? Do you half-heartedly support the organization’s vision? Do you find leadership coaching unnecessary or tedious? Do you constantly change the vision? Do you find it a waste of time to read leadership books, blogs or other information? If this is you, I hate to say it, but… you may have peaked some time ago. But there is still hope! It may take a change of scenery (a different organization), it may take a little time off to reflect and recharge, or it may take a willingness to follow the organization’s vision. What are you going to do in order to peak today?
