Willies on Ice – Remarkable, Narcissist or Idiot

I saw this video the other day and wasn’t sure if I was impressed and amazed or if I was just thinking that this guy is a narcissist or just an idiot. One thing is true… he is the best at what he does and is a world-record holder and that is remarkable.  It did get me thinking about the people I know in business and have worked with. Some are truly remarkable, some are narcissistic and sadly, some are just idiots.

The guy in this video is one of these three types. I’m not sure which type he is, maybe he’s a little of each. Regardless, we can also see these same three people in the business world as well. Odds are, you work with each of these and you work for one of these.

  • The Narcissist – This person is all about “me”. He’s overly self-involve, selfish and often vain. In the video we could make that assumption about this man. In business, we see this person all the time. Or maybe we see part-time narcissists. He holds up meetings because he’s consistently late. He takes credit for the work of others. He protects the status quo. He thinks the company is there to serve him and meet his needs, regardless of what’s best for the business.
  • The Idiot – This person doesn’t think. He’s foolish and senseless. Going 110 mph on ice could be considered foolish and senseless in some circles. In business, this is the person that steals. He makes crude remarks to coworkers and customers. This person wastes his talent by allowing himself to be miscast. He gossips. He’s disengaged, spending a third of his life accomplishing nothing. Disengaged has the ability to be remarkable but has lost his passion and doesn’t care anymore, hence, idiotic.
  • The Remarkable – This person is at the top of his game. He’s the best of the best. The guy in the video is a world-record holder. That’s remarkable. In business, this person is the top 5% of all performers. He’s the innovator. He has matched his talents to the task at hand. He’s figuring out how he can improve every day. He meets his personal goals which are usually four times as high as the organization has given him.

Which one are you? Are you a third of each? If you’re truly remarkable, congratulations. If you’re meeting expectations, but not excelling, take a look at each of these types. More than likely, besides remarkable traits, you have a little of the others as well. Set a plan in action to move away from those types and then 100% into remarkable. If your remarkable has left the building, well, you know what to do… go get it. Either bring it back with you or bring it somewhere else. Strive for remarkable and stay away from the narcissists and idiots. If all else fails, hang around the remarkable and maybe some if it will rub off.
